Project Overview

Dancing with Daffodils is a four-year Innovate UK–funded collaborative R&D project under the Farming Futures: Climate Smart Farming programme, focused on developing a novel, plant-derived feed additive to reduce methane emissions from ruminant livestock while maintaining or improving productivity.

The project harnesses haemanthamine, a naturally occurring alkaloid extracted from daffodils, to address one of agriculture’s most pressing challenges—methane emissions from cattle, which contribute significantly to global greenhouse gases. By integrating expertise across agriculture, chemistry, animal science, and commercial supply chains, the project aims to deliver a scalable, safe, and commercially viable solution for low-emission livestock systems.

Aims & Objectives

The project aims to develop and commercialise a ruminant feed additive that:

  • Reduces methane emissions from dairy cattle
  • Maintains or enhances animal productivity

    dsadas

  • Supports net zero agriculture and emerging carbon markets

    dsadas

  • Improves nitrogen utilisation and feed efficiency
  • Provides a scalable, UK-based bioactive supply chain

    dsadas

Key objectives include establishing a reliable daffodil biomass supply, optimising extraction and formulation of haemanthamine, validating efficacy and safety through laboratory and animal trials, and progressing regulatory approval and commercial deployment.

Three-Phase Project Approach

Across the project
Phase 1 – Feasibility & Proof of Concept (0–18 months)
Phase 2 – Safety, Regulation & Validation (18–36 months)
Phase 3 – On-Farm Demonstration & Deployment (36–48 months)
Feasibility & Proof of Concept
Safety, Regulation & Validation
On-Farm Demonstration & Deployment
Guiding question
“Can we produce an effective and scalable solution?”
“Is it safe, compliant, and ready for market?”
“Does it work in real farming systems?”
Key activities
Establish daffodil supply chain and biomass consistency
Conduct toxicology and safety studies (including regulatory-grade testing)
Deploy additive in commercial farm trials
Develop cost-effective extraction and isolation of haemanthamine

Demonstrated real-world efficacy and readiness for market launch.
On-Farm Demonstration & Deployment

Commercial Opportunity

This project targets a rapidly emerging global market for methane-reducing feed additives, driven by:

  • Increasing regulatory pressure on agricultural emissions
  • Retailer and supply chain commitments to Net Zero

    dsadas

  • Demand for productivity-enhancing, sustainable livestock solutions
  • Growth in carbon credit markets linked to methane reduction

    dsadas

The development of a natural, plant-derived additive positions the consortium to offer a differentiated product with strong appeal across dairy and livestock sectors. The UK’s status as a leading daffodil producer also provides a unique domestic supply advantage, supporting scalability and export potential.
